Today, it's all about technology!
While technology may not represent all of what interests buyers, we agree that there has been a pronounced swing toward sustainability, eco-friendly materials, energy-efficiency and digital technology. One local builder has taken this to a whole new level.
The United States Department of Energy has developed a set of standards that define a new class of housing. Known as Challenge Homes, the goal is to produce new homes that are "Zero Energy Ready," produce all the energy that their inhabitants consume.
Growth Luxury Homes (GLH) of Las Vegas has taken up that challenge. The company recently announced plans to develop an entire community of 54 "net positive" energy-generating homes on a 42-acre hillside site within MacDonald Highlands in Henderson. Partnering with Tesla Inc., the builder will offer a new Tesla automobile as a standard feature with every home. Home prices in the new subdivision, to be known as The Hills, will begin at $1.8 million and will range in size between 3,800 and 7,500 square feet of living space.
According to a company spokesman, the homes will be designed to exceed Department of Energy standards, resulting in positive energy gain within an "energy-independent" community. In addition, he noted that the homes and the community as a whole will include devices and technology currently being developed for "Smart Cities applications".
Construction is already underway on the first home to be built as part of this exciting partnership. One of 10 luxury models to be located in the Shadow Canyon Estates community within the gated Augusta area of Southern Highlands, this first estate home is situated on a 3/4 acre lot at 26 Shadow Canyon Court. It is a 6-bedroom, 5 3/4-bath, 6-car garage Mediterranean-style home with 9,825 square feet. Along with state-of-the art technology that includes photovoltaic roof panels for solar energy, Tesla Powerwalls for battery storage of electricity and a Tesla charging station are featured. This home is listed at $5.5 million, and the home's buyer will move in with a Tesla electric automobile already parked in the garage!
No specific timetable has been announced by the company, but it's a bold vision that holds great promise. The collaboration between GLH and Tesla is exciting enough, but the all-encompassing vision is for sustainable communities that utilize the best of technology to establish new benchmarks of lifestyle excellence. In addition, the company has publicly stated that it is exploring some options for edible landscaping, community gardens, electric shuttle buses within and outside its new community and a whole host of innovative security and community convenience features.
